CHEMSAFE

The numerical database Chemsafe contains assessed safety parameters and properties for more than 3000 flammable liquids, gases and dusts.

The Problem: Reliable Data

Safety parameters of fire and explosion prevention are essential for assessment of hazards while

  • processing
  • filling
  • storing
  • transporting
  • disposing

flammable substances.

Users in trade and industry need reliable parameters recommended by experts. These data must always be up to date and rapidly available.

The Solution: CHEMSAFE

The requirements for current, reliable and rapidly availabale data are fulfilled by the database CHEMSAFE. This database, which is online since 1989, is a joint project between

  • PTB Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig
  • BAM Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, Berlin
  • DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V., Frankfurt am Main

BAM and PTB are responsible for the content of the database, DECHEMA for organisational and technical aspects as well as for marketing.

The Sources: BAM und PTB

Sources of the data are own measurements and data compiled from the literature by the laboratories or BAM and PTB, which are specialized on assessing physico-chemical hazards of flammable gases, dusts (BAM), and liquids (PTB).

The gathered data are checked in respect of their reliability, rated and stored in the data collection.

The Data: Characteristics and more

Actually CHEMSAFE contains assessed safety parameters for more than 3000 flammable liquids, gases and dusts, e.g.:

  • flash point
  • autoignition temperature
  • explosion limits
  • minimum ignition energy
  • maximum exprimental safe gap
  • maximum explosion pressure
  • maximum pressure rise
  • ignition temperature of a dust layer
  • smoldering point
  • minimum decomposition pressure

Besides the rated safety characteristics the following data are available:

  • substance identification data
  • thermophysical data
  • labelling and classification according to national and international regulations
  • maximum working place concentration (MAK)
  • bibliographic data
  • definitions and help texts

Actually about 60 000 data sets are stored.

The Access: Inhouse or Internet

A) Inhouse

The Inhouse-Version of CHEMSAFE offers a window-based graphical user interface. This interface allows a quick and successful access to the database especially for the unexperienced user. More complex search requests can be stored and managed. An outstanding feature is the possibility to plot the data (here e.g.: Explosion range of mixture CO/water/air at different temperatures).

CHEMSAFE Inhouse is now available in two different versions:

  • CHEMSAFE-ORS is based on an ORACLE database and is designed for Client-Server usage. This version of CHEMSAFE contains together with the recommended data the data of the secondary literature. In addition it offers especially the feature to enter and maintain own data sets.
  • CHEMSAFE-Lite is a single user version runing directly from CD-ROM. This version of the database contains only the recommended values. It is not possible to enter own data. CHEMSAFE-Lite is recommended especially for occasional users.

Additional informationen:

B)  Internet

Our Internet solution Chemsafe ... on the WEB allows direct access to the complete CHEMSAFE database simply from your web browser. Searching the database and displaying basic information is free of charge.  Access to the numerical data sets itself is possible for registered users on a pay-per-view basis. The prices for downloading data depend on the size of the data table. They are announced online while searching.
